Murchison Falls N. Park – “The world’s Most powerful Waterfall”

Conservation Importance: The first protected area in Uganda to be gazetted as a National Park in 1952. The park protects only sizeable population of giraffes, herds of buffaloes, elephants, Uganda kobs, Oribi, hartebeests, lions, leopards and hyenas. Also the park protects a 20-30km stretch of the River Nile crocodiles and water birds.

Specie diversity: Ecosystem types range from savanna grassland, woodland, tropical rainforests, rivers and swamps. In this wide range of habitat, 479 species of birds have been recorded, 87 of mammals and 14 of reptiles. Fish and butterflies.

Tourist attraction: Murchison falls are among major attractions of this park. They can be accessed by boat on River Nile from Parra to the bottom, or by road on the top of the falls. Along the 7km river stretch, are plenty of water birds, hippos, crocodiles, bush-bucks and water-bucks. Lions, Leopards, Jackals, Warthogs, Buffaloes, Hartebeests, Kobs, Oribi, Giraffes, Elephants, all these can be seen while on the game drive.

Size and accessibility: The park, to gether with adjoining wildlife reserves of karuma and Bugungu are jointly managed as “Murchison Falls Protected area” totals to 5,072km2. Park alone covers 3840km2. Paraa is 86km from Masindi the closest town.

Elevation: 620 – 750m.

Timing: Good all the year.
